Louisiana War Veterans Home - Monday, July 18, 2016

Attending were Auxiliary President Rose Zimbro, Auxiliary members May Hartley, Brenda Ogden, Honorary Junior President Emma Busby, Legion members Raymond Hartley, Mike Peats, Terry Sharp and Sons members Ethan Sharp, Jr., Donald Taylor and Dylan Zimbro.  We served ice cream sundaes with all the fixings and cookies.  Bingo was played by about 30 War Vets residents and all had a good time.

"A Day of Remembrance" - Proclamation - September 2016

Mayor Mike Cooper, a member of the Sons of the American Legion Squadron 16 of Covington, recently signed a proclamation declaring September 11th as a "Day of Remembrance."

Little Miss Poppy Hailey Ogden distributed Memorial Poppies to all who attended the program and led the Pledge of Allegiance.

 

 

Past Presidents, Gold Star Mothers/Sisters Luncheon - Sunday, October 9, 2016

An annual luncheon was held to honor the Past Unit 16 Senior Presidents, Past Unit 16 Honorary Junior Presidents and Unit 16 Gold Star Mothers/Sisters at Mandina's The luncheon was hosted by current Unit 16 President Rose Zimbro.  Attending the event were past Unit 16 Presidents Carol Johansen (1999-01), Betty McArthur (2010-2012) and May Hartley (2012-2016); past Honorary Unit 16 Junior Presidents Jane Duracher (2002-03) and Treaser McArthur (2010-2012), current Honorary Unit 16 Junior President Emma Busby; and Gold Star Mother Sharon McLeese.  Also attending were Auxiliary members Gvorja Busby, Mary Kollister, Ollie McGillivary, Connie Parr, Rhonda Perrin, Diane Plaisance, Frances Rosevally, and Junior member Abigale Zimbro.

 

 

La. War Veterans Visit Post 16 - Monday, October 17, 2016

Fifteen residents traveled to Post 16 to enjoy Baked Chicken, Mushroom Noodle Casserole, Corn and Peas, Salad, Rolls and Pumpkin Pecan Cake for dessert.  The veterans were entertained with Bingo games and all had a good time and collected prizes.

Special Needs and Legion Family Children Halloween Party

Saturday, October 22, 2016

Post 16 Family hosted a Halloween party for Special Needs and Legion Family Children at the Post Home.  Seventy special needs and children attended.  Hotdogs with chili, potato chips, Halloween cupcakes, soft drinks and punch were served.  Throw the bean bag through the mouth of the pumpkin, Halloween coloring sheets, face painting, fishing booth, haunted house and piñatas were enjoyed by all.

Past President May Hartley recited “The Veteran” and Little Miss Poppy Hailey Ogden led the Pledge of Allegiance.

 

 

American Education Week - Thursday, November 17, 2016

One hundred seventy dozen doughnuts were delivered to teachers' lounges in 27 schools in the local area, a total of 2,040 donuts were delivered.  Auxiliary members delivering donuts were President Rose Zimbro, Past Presidents May Hartley and Carol Johansen, Mary Kollister, Ollie McGillivary, Brenda Ogden, and Diane Plaisance.  A big thank you to Legion members Raymond Hartley, Emil Johansen, and Marvin Zimbro for helping.

Special Children, Adults and Children of Veterans Christmas Party

Saturday, December 3, 2016

Post 16 Family hosted its annual Christmas Party for Special Needs Children and Adults at the Post Home.  Approximately 100 special needs participants along with children and grandchildren of Post 16 Family members were in attendance.  Refreshments were served, games were played, and Christmas songs were led by Santa and Mrs. Claus.  Each attendee was presented a gift.

 

 

Legion Family Christmas Party - Saturday, December 10, 2016

Post 16 Family held their annual Christmas Party jointly with the Military Order of Purple Heart 741 and the 40/8 Voiture 224.  The potluck meal was delicious and the Christmas Story skit was outstanding.

 

 

Reserve War Veterans - Monday, December 12, 2016

Post 16 Family members visited the residents at the Reserve War Veterans Home.  Attending were President Rose Zimbro, Past President May Hartley, Auxiliary members Mary Kollister, Ollie McGillivary, Brenda Ogden, Past Legion Commander Mike Peats, Legion members Raymond Hartley, Charles Hession, Joe Ogden, Wayne Plaisance, and Sons member Donald Taylor.  We brought them assorted fruit, hot chocolate and cookies and played Bingo with about 30 residents.  All had a wonderful time!

 

 

Special Needs Families - Sunday, December 18, 2016

The Legion Family provided Christmas for five families with a total of fourteen children.  Making the presentation were Past President May Hartley, Auxiliary members Mary Kollister, Ollie McGillivary, Kay Peats, Past Commander Mike Peats, Legion members Paul Hamburger, Ray Hartley and Wayne Plaisance.

 

 

Louisiana War Veterans Home - Tuesday, January 17, 2017

Past President May Hartley, Auxiliary member Brenda Ogden, Legion members Raymond Hartley and Joe Ogden, and Sons member Donny Taylor traveled to the veterans’ home.  King Cakes and hot chocolate were served to the veterans and Bingo games with prizes were played.

Special Needs Children, Adults and Children of Veterans Easter Party

Saturday, April 1, 2017

Post 16 Family hosted its annual Easter Party for Special Needs Children and Adults, and children of local Veterans.  Forty-six participants enjoyed Hotdogs with chili, potato chips, cookies, and soft drinks.  Face painting, decorating egg shaped cupcakes, dying eggs and an Easter egg hunt were also enjoyed by all.  The Easter Bunny made his appearance and took photos with the guests.

 

 

La. War Veterans Visit Post 16 - Monday, April 17, 2017

Seventeen residents traveled to Post 16 to enjoy smoked chicken, jambalaya, baked beans, rolls and strawberry shortcake for lunch; and played bingo games with prizes.

 

 

Scholarships - May 2017

   

American Legion Auxiliary Junior members Christine Nicole Cousins and Treaser Marie McArthur were each presented with Unit 16's $500 scholarship.  They also received the American Legion Post 16's $1,000 scholarship.

 

 

"Poppy Month" - May 2016

Covington Mayor Michael Cooper, also a member of the Sons of the American Legion, signed a proclamation declaring May as “Poppy Month.”  Members of the Robert H. Special Olympics - Saturday, May 20, 2017

More than 70 American Legion Family Members gathered State-wide to Volunteer with the Softball Throw.  Members of the Robert H. Burns, American Legion Family Post #16 of Covington volunteered at the Special Olympics held at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond.
